Ok, the first avantage that CMSs have over static sites / standalone application tie ins is the fact that the basic site structure and programming is already available. You do not have to re-invent the wheel.
User registration, site configuration, wyswig editors, links, contacts, newsfeeds are just some of the features you get out of the box with a CMS. Custom coding the same would require time, effort and major funds.
